Available in standard form with power of upto 103bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the Charade. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 113.3bhp to 175.1bhp with modifications varying from a few DIY mods to some pretty major engine work. The higher you go the more unreliable the car will be and you should expect to have to rebuild the engine regularly if you want to extract silly power. A big forced induction upgrade would be needed to push beyond the 100bhp per 1000cc limit.
An engine swap with that from the 103bhp Charade Hatchback will give a massive power gain and provide a better base to work from. The standard Charades are positively crying out for more power. Top of your list for tuning mods will be a sports exhaust system, a fuel boost valve (for a snappy throttle response) and a good quality induction kit.
The Car Tuning Guide recommend that on the Charades , you get a fast road cam. Internal engine modifications that should be high up on your list would be polishing and porting the head. Some Charade owners report increased MPG with a flowed head.
The Charades come in various power levels right up to 103bhp. If you apply a few tuning mods to this model of Charade you will see power gains from anywhere between 113.3bhp to 144.2bhp. But this sort of power requires some pretty heavy investment and a hell of a lot of engine work. .
Adding forced induction will see big power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. Turbos are harder to add to a car than a supercharger. With a turbo the boost curve is related to the engine speed making it hard to map. The nice steady boost to rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them easier to map. The Charades handling can be dramatically improved with some choice suspension modifications. The Car Tuning Guide do not recommend lowering more than 35mm.
