Tuning modifications for the Hyundai Pony X14

Available in standard form with power of upto 65bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the Pony X14. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 71.5bhp to 110.5bhp with modifications varying from a few DIY mods to some pretty major engine work. The higher you go the more unreliable the car will be and you should expect to have to rebuild the engine regularly if you want to extract silly power. A big forced induction upgrade would be needed to push beyond the 100bhp per 1000cc limit.
Hyundai mods should include an engine swap to provide a better base to work from. The ’65bhp Hatchbacks’ is a real gem in terms of power. Hyundai have produced some interesting cars over the years. The Pony X14s really will benefit from a hike in the power, alternatively reducing the weight will help to improve the performance of your car. Pony X14 tuning projects should generally start with some improvement to the intake/exhaust of the engine. So get a good quality sponge or cotton gauze panel air filter. A good fuel pressure regulator will up the throttle response. The next level of modifications involve taking more aggressive action. The Pony X14 responds reasonably well to a fast road cam which is one of the best value mods out there.
NOTE: POWER GAINS ARE PROPORTIONAL TO YOUR BASE POWER. The more you start with the better your gain will be. Don’t waste time on small engines – do a swap. Internal engine modifications that should be high up on your list would be polishing and porting the head. Some Pony X14 owners report increased MPG with a flowed head. The Pony X14s handling can be dramatically improved with some choice suspension modifications. A drop of 35mm will work well on most cars, any lower and you will hit other problems.
