Available in standard form with power of upto 148bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the 3. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 162.8bhp to 251.6bhp with modifications varying from a few DIY mods to some pretty major engine work. The higher you go the more unreliable the car will be and you should expect to have to rebuild the engine regularly if you want to extract silly power. A big forced induction upgrade would be needed to push beyond the 100bhp per 1000cc limit.

Mazda mods should include an engine swap to provide a better base to work from. The ‘148bhp 3 Hatchbacks’ is a real gem in terms of power. The already BHP endowed range of 3s reward tuners with a satisfying power gain. Top of your list for tuning mods will be a sports exhaust system, a fuel boost valve (for a snappy throttle response) and a good quality induction kit.

A fast road cam will make quite a difference to the peak power of your 3. Turn your attention next to the 3s engine head. With a good gas flowed ported engine you will see much better mid and peak range power.

Mazda put together a nice package but the turbo 3 owners have a real tuners dream. A remap and Intercooler will add a lot of power to the engine and in some cases you can double your power. The 3s come in various power levels right up to 148bhp. On a motorsport prepared 3 it is possible to achieve power figures of anywhere approaching 192.4bhp to 281.2bhp. But this sort of power requires some pretty heavy investment and a hell of a lot of engine work. . High on your list of mods for your 3 should be handling improvements. Although lowering improves handling you should stick to a drop of 35mm.
