Available in standard form with power of upto 198bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the RX-7. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 217.8bhp to 336.6bhp with mods ranging from a few subtle add ons to a full engine rebuild! And more in the case of most Turbo engines if you include an uprated turbo.
Mazda RX7 mods should include an engine swap if you have the NASP rotary engine, to provide a better base to work from. The ’198bhp RX-7 Coupes’ is a real gem in terms of power. With a few mods you will make yours a road scorcher rather than just a sporty coupe.
Top of your list for tuning mods will be a sports exhaust system, a fuel boost valve (for a snappy throttle response) and a good quality induction kit.
The RX-7s come in various power levels right up to 198bhp as per the RX-7 Coupe If you apply a few tuning mods to this model of RX-7 you will see power gains from anywhere between 217.8bhp to 336.6bhp. Any more than this and you will start to see unreliability appearing.
A RX-7 with forced induction (turbo or supercharger) will give even larger power gains that this. The most powerful RX-7 has a healthy 198 bhp. If this is a turbo engine as standard you can further increase the power from anywhere between 257.4 bhp to 376.2bhp with mods we have outlined above.)
It is easier to swap the engine for a Turbo model than it is to upgrade a NASP rotary engine with a turbo charger.
Suspension improvements can dramatically increase the road holding and cornering of your RX-7. Although lowering improves handling you should stick to a drop of 35mm unless you are prepared to change the whole supensiong geometry. The RX7 can be a little tail happy in the wet but with slightly softer rear suspension and an anti roll bar things can be greatly improved.
