Available in standard form with power of upto 118bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the Sports. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 129.8bhp to 200.6bhp with mods ranging from a few subtle add ons to a full engine rebuild! And more in the case of most Turbo engines if you include an uprated turbo.
If you have one of the lower powered Sport you should think about an engine swap with the engine from the 118bhp Sports Pick-ups. Car Tuning Guide think it is a shame that the Sportss were not offered with more powerful engine options, but this is where customisation comes in. Sports tuning projects should generally start with some improvement to the intake/exhaust of the engine. So get a stainless steel exhaust and good quality sponge or cotton gauze panel air filter. A good fuel pressure regulator will up the throttle response.
The next level of modifications involve taking more aggressive action. The Sports responds reasonably well to a fast road cam which is one of the best value mods out there. Internal engine modifications that should be high up on your list would be polishing and porting the head. Some Sports owners report increased MPG with a flowed head.
The top Sports offers a base power level of 118 bhp. The car tuning guide would expect you to see power gains from 129.8 bhp to 165.2 bhp!
Adding forced induction will see big power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. Superchargers are generally easier to add aftermarket to a car than a turbo. With a turbo the boost curve is related to the engine speed making it hard to map. The nice steady boost to rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them easier to map. Suspension improvements can dramatically increase the road holding and cornering of your Sports. To avoid other problems you should lower the car no more than 36mm.
