Available in standard form with power of upto 136bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the 1.6. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 149.6bhp to 231.2bhp but this is far out of the reach of your local part store.
You will need some extensive work on the engine block, gas flowing, porting, 3 angle valve job, fast road cams, a remap, full balance and blueprint and even then you will need to add some pretty serious forced induction upgrades.
The more powerful 1.8s provide a suitable donor engine for the lower powered models in the range. There are some star performers in the 1.6 line up. With a few mods you will make yours a road scortcher rather than just a hot hatch.Your first engine modifications for your 1.6 should be an induction kit, sports exhaust and fuel boost valve.
A fast road cam will make quite a difference to the peak power of your 1.6. Getting better flow through the head of the engine would reward your 1.6 with more power. So get the engine head polished and ported.

To avoid other problems you should lower the car no more than 36mm.
