Tuning tips for the Volkswagen Beetle

Engine Tuning

Beetle tuning tips from the car tuning guide, we take a look at the best power mods for the Beetle in our latest guide.

Available in standard form with power of upto 169bhp (depending on the year), so this goes to show the tuning potential of the Beetle. From this you can increase the power from anywhere between 185.9bhp to 287.3bhp with modifications varying from a few DIY mods to some pretty major engine work. The higher you go the more unreliable the car will be and you should expect to have to rebuild the engine regularly if you want to extract silly power. A big forced induction upgrade would be needed to push beyond the 100bhp per 1000cc limit.

Volkswagen mods should include an engine swap to provide a better base to work from. The ’169bhp Beetle Hatchbacks’ is a real gem in terms of power. The already BHP endowed range of Beetles reward tuners with a satisfying power gain. Beetle tuning projects should generally start with some improvement to the intake/exhaust of the engine. So get a stainless steel exhaust and good quality induction kit. A good fuel pressure regulator will up the throttle response.

FASTROAD CAMS should be next up on your tuning list and will offer big power gains on the Beetle. Getting better flow through the head of the engine would reward your Beetle with more power. So get the engine head polished and ported.

The top Beetle Hatchback offers a base power level of 169 bhp. The car tuning guide would expect you to see power gains from 185.9 bhp to 287.3 bhp!

Forced induction Beetles respond exceptionally well to tuning mods especially remaps, also add an intercooler to your mod list. The most powerful Beetle has a healthy 169 bhp. In a competition setting you may well, with some forced induction, reboring and other major work see power figures between 219.7 bhp to 321.1bhp with mods we have outlined above.) Many Beetle owners improve the handling of their cars with slightly stiffer springs. You shouldn’t really lower a car by more than 30-35mm.

We will have more detailed Beetle modification guides in the near future. Please check the site regularly for updates.
